Grand Central Station & Bryant Park Engagement Shoot – Adriana & Mike
Many say that one of the keys to finding the perfect partner is that they should be friends, first, which often helps for longevity of the relationship. And even the jewelry ads that you see on TV promote the idea that your partner should be your best friend. Adriana and Mike are a good example of that and when working and interacting with them during their engagement shoot, I could tell there was a special love and connection there. You can tell that they were friends, first, not just in a linear-time sense, but in their relationship, as well. Things just flowed really well. During the engagement shoot, Mike even said that they were friends before they started dating and that they dated for many years! An many of my married friends have echoed similar sentiments. What do you think? Can you see/feel the love between Adriana & Mike?
Tuisha & Kash’s Proposal & Engagement – Four Seasons Resort, Maui
Do you ever get the feeling that things happen for a reason? That things just happened to work out. That’s pretty much how I felt about Kash’s marriage proposal to Tuisha and their engagement shoot.
So, in early February, I (Darren) was on Maui in Hawaii, working a corporate job. While there, I received a message from fellow Esvy photographer, Kathryn, that she had received an inquiry about a possible proposal and engagement shoot on Maui. The schedule was tight, but after trading a couple emails, texts and phone calls with Kash, we were able to work out a time and game plan for him to propose to his girlfriend at the Four Seasons on Maui. We also coordinated our game plan with their Events Coordinator, Paola.
When I arrived at the Four Seasons, we had about 30 minutes to our appointed time for Kash to pop the big question. Kash was secretly texting me with updates about the estimated time of arrival. Paola and her team were putting the finishing touches on the special location. The challenge was that the wind was so strong that it was blowing out all the candles. Paola and I would try to re-light the candles, but Mother Nature kept on sending in the wind. The following day was supposed to grey and a little rainy, so we were feeling the start of the storm. The candles were important to the mood and atmosphere of the location. With less than 15 minutes to show time, Paola makes the decision to change out candles for lanterns. It was not her preference, but she wanted everything to be perfect for Kash and Tuisha.
With her crew already gone, Paola and I rushed to the storage closet, loaded the cart with new lanterns, rush back to the location and started to swap everything out. At some point in there, I was literally running, trying to make sure everything was in place. Kash texts me “We’re on our way.” But Paola and I were not set yet. Paola says to me, “You have to go hide!”
I sprint over to my hiding spot with maybe only 20-30 seconds to spare before Tuisha and Kash enter the area. It was awesome to watch Tuisha’s reaction as everything took place!
“She said yes!” Kash exclaimed and cheers, hoots, and whistles rang out from the balconies above, as random people sounded off their congratulations!
As Kash introduced me and Paola to Tuisha, I was a sweaty mess from all of the running around, but it was worth it to ensure that the location was perfect. For the next 20-30 minutes, Tuisha was still in a bit of shock and you can see it in a couple of the photos, Tuisha was completed taken back. Great Job, Kash! I would say that was a successful proposal!
So, going back to “things happening for a reason”…. it turns out that Kash and Tuisha from the greater NYC area, our of where I and Esvy Photography are based. And it turns out that Kash is best friends with a guy that went to high school with me. Also, Tuisha knows a number of people that I went to college with in Atlanta! So it was very serendipitous that Kash and Tuisha would get engaged in Hawaii the same time that I was there and all of us have so much in common! Such a small world!!! Things just happen for a reason!
So…. If you want to propose to your girlfriend in Hawaii, hit up Paola at the Four Seasons and invite me to come along, so that I can photograph it! 😀
Jacklyn & Ly’s Engagement Shoot – Maui, Hawaii
With Esvy Photography based out of the Greater NYC area, many or most of our photos tend to have an urban or sub-urban feel. Rarely do we really go out into a natural setting to do a photo shoot. So on a recent business trip to Maui, Hawaii, we took the opportunity to do an engagement shoot along the coast to try to get back into nature. We don’t know anyone on Maui, but because of a fortunate set of circumstances and easy schedule adjustments, Jacklyn & Ly, our future clients from Seattle, were able to make it to Maui. And if you ask them, I’d be they’d say that the trip to Hawaii was totally worth it! For having never been to Maui and only doing research online, I think the shoot turned out really well.
Jacquelyn & Anthony’s Waveny House Engagement Shoot
You have to love the Fall / Autumn time in New England. The leaves are changing colors and make for a beautiful background to any photo shoot. Jacquelyn & Anthony wanted to stay in a more suburban, park environment for their engagement shoot, as they don’t really fancy themselves as “city people”. And the Waveny House, in New Canaan, Connecticut was the perfect location!

Patricia & Rory’s Highline Engagement Shoot, NYC
When it’s a beautiful day, what do you do, you go outside, right? But in NYC, the Highline gets crowded really early, so crowded that you can barely walk without bumping into someone. So when Patricia & Rory wanted to do their engagement shoot on the Highline, we knew we had to do it early in the morning! And I’ll be honest, I don’t think i have ever seen it that empty, except in the middle of the winter. But I think we got some great photos! What do you think?

Esther & Andrew’s DUMBO & Brooklyn Bridge Engagement Shoot, NYC
Esther and Andrew are officially getting married in Korea, but before making the trip across the Pacific, they wanted to do a portrait and engagement shoot in Brooklyn. And with summer in NYC, if you want to avoid the crowds and the high temps, we had to do the photo shoot at sunrise. Not only was the light pretty amazing, but a couple of young guys were cruising around in their McLaren and graciously allowed us to do a couple photos with the car. You never see these types of cars in NYC. The roads have too many potholes and road plates that it would be a nightmare to drive. So it was a very fortunate surprise for us.

Caitlin & Fred – Top of The Rock & Central Park Engagement Shoot
As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, by living in NYC, we are spoiled with so many fabulous locations that it’s very difficult to choose where to do your engagement shoot. For Caitlin & Fred, we traded probably 3 or 4 emails on suggestions or ideas of where they wanted to do their engagement shoot. Originally, we were supposed to do parts of the Highline or West Village. But in the end, we randomly settled upon the Top of The Rock and Central Park. To avoid the crowds we opted to do the shoot as early as possible. And with that came harsh sunlight, a not so ideal situation for good photos. But I think it worked out pretty. The light was not ideal, but the location and their wonderful chemistry and energy made up for that. You can see in the photos that they really have a special love and connection. Their chemistry is great and these are one of those couples where you know will be alright. Caitlin even showed off her fabulous dance moves and that had Fred crackin’ up! 😛 (See the 3rd image below)

Corinne & Anthony – NYC / Lower Manhattan Engagement Shoot
NYC is filled with so many classic locations for photo shoots, it’s quite overwhelming to choose. Central Park? Soho? East Village? Brooklyn Bridge? There’s too many from which to choose. But, when 2 attorneys get together, it seems quite fitting that they would choose to do their engagement shoot next the courthouse and many official government buildings in Lower Manhattan. I rarely go down to that part of town, but the area is filled with beautiful buildings that look like they belong in Washington DC. And it’s spectacularly beautiful.
As you can see from the photos, Corinne & Anthony have quite a connection. It’s pure simple and beautiful. During the photo shoot, I was lucky enough to see their chemistry and you can tell that they have what it takes to last forever! I cannot wait for their wedding next year!

Engagement Shoot in The Village and Brooklyn Bridge Park – Tricia & John
Fall is a perfect time of the year for an engagement shoot! In NY, the cold temperatures didn’t really hit, so warmer temps stuck around a little longer, than normal. So Tricia and John took advantage of the great weather with a last minute engagement shoot in the Village and Brooklyn Bridge Park.
DUMBO & Brooklyn Bridge Park Engagement Shoot – Erin & Taylor
I’m lucky to live in the greater NYC area! You know why? There are just so many great locations for an engagement shoot! It’s really quite ridiculous! I mean, any good photographer should be able to make nearly any location work, but NYC is just amazing. And despite its plethora (yes, I just used the word plethora) of great locations, the DUMBO / Brooklyn Bridge Park (on the Brooklyn side) is always a classic location. It’s the NYC that you expect to see when you visit NY and it will never go out of style, so long as the building developers don’t mess with its soul.
So when Erin and Taylor asked to do their engagement shoot in Dumbo, it was an obvious yes. And they wanted to take a little NYC back with them when they do their wedding in Illinois, next year.
